Palacio de las palmas was part of the Plan Piloto 1955-1958, an urban proposal for Havana based on the modernist principles of CIAM. The square plan of the palace including a courtyard is inspired by different historical palaces present in Havana who themselves are inspired by Renaissance Palazzos. The organisation of the programs works as a series of boxes and platforms Covered by a large concrete veil composed of umbrella-like structure disposed as a grid and projecting the image of a grove of palm trees. The project is then extended through the gardens with this time a multitude of real palm trees.
